âI thought we talked about you staying away from the Bean? Geneviève is going to realize youâre not an actual cat.â Emmanuel put his car into gear and started driving the five miles to the house he was renting.
âNonsense. My skill at mimicry is perfection. She thinks me a beautiful, highly intelligent kitty and allows me to curl up in her downstairs office if the weather is foul. I know because she told me. She talks to me the same way she talks to her canine familiars.â Logan curled up on the passenger seat and went to sleep. Emmanuel shook his head and focused on the road, his mind straying frequently to the red-haired witch heâd left back at the coffee shop.
The vibration of the phone in his coat pocket jarred Emmanuel from his musings.
âAllo.â He answered without looking at the caller id and then wished he had. The sound of his bossâs voice was an unwelcome surprise.
âEmmanuel, ca va?â he stifled the urge to say what he was thinking and opted instead for diplomacy.
âDirector, what a pleasant surprise.â
âAn opportunity has presented itself that we cannot allow to pass.â Emmanuel eyes widened and he shook his head when Logan opened his mouth to speak.
âWhat do you need us to do?â he asked, bracing himself for bad news.
âI need you to head south to rendezvous with another agent. His partner is busy, and the regional director said your skill set would suit the mission.â
âI just saw her yesterday. She said nothing about a mission or needing help.â
âThis is a recent development. We briefed her on the situation early this morning.â Emmanuel sighed and looked down at Logan, who had unsheathed his claws and was watching him intently.
âDâaccord. When do we need to leave?â
âMeet up with Finn tomorrow afternoon and take his yacht to the rendezvous. He has all the details. The director with provide you with the supplies you need before you go, head over there in the morning.â
âHow long do you think this will take?â Emmanuel asked, thinking of the woman heâd been holding in his arms less than an hour ago. Great. Tell her you want to pursue a relationship with her, then go away for business for an indefinite period. Definitely not the way to start if you want to win your way into a womanâs affections.
âAs long as it takes.â
Emmanuel pulled into the driveway of the small ranch house he had rented for his stay. The minute his lights illuminated the porch, he saw the woman. She stood stock still, a long old-fashioned gown blowing in an unseen wind. He stared incredulously.
âYouâre seeing this, right?â he asked Logan. The Fae nodded, his eyes taking on a green hue that told Emmanuel heâd draw up his personal defenses and was ready to attack if need be. The two climbed from the car. Emmanuel took two steps towards the house and the woman turned towards him. Now that he was closer, he could see what he hadnât. This was no woman; it was a ghost.
